Did You Know The Types Of Bilingual Education To Enroll Your Child?

In today's interconnected world, it has become of utmost importance to communicate effectively with people from other communities and races. To sustain oneself in the globally competitive world, one needs to know how to speak more than one language. In fact, the key to succeeding in today's cutthroat competition is to be well-versed in more than one language, which dual language bilingual education can provide.

There are undoubtedly several benefits attached to being bilingual. Bilingualism not only gives an individual the ability to speak two languages fluently but also aids in their cognitive and personality development. If you want to enroll your student into a bilingual school by looking through its benefits, then you must be wondering what its types and approaches are. Let us look at them for your clear understanding.

Types Of Bilingual Education You Must Know for Taking Your Child’s Admission

Many schools around the world are today adopting a dual language model to teach their students. The significant growth of the bilingualism model in primary, secondary, and elementary schools is evidence that there is a huge demand for parents to enroll their students in bilingual schools. It is interesting to note that there are various approaches followed in a bilingual school, depending on its type. Let us see what the different types of bilingual education are.

1] Transitional Bilingual Education

There are mainly two types of bilingual education, out of which transitional bilingual education is the one. In this approach, children first acquire a level of fluency in their native language before going forward to the second language. The idea behind this approach is that students who are linguistically fluent in their native language are much more capable and efficient in learning the second language.

The skills that they acquire in their home language can be translated into a second language to ensure that they understand it better. In this way, students are taught in their native language in the initial years of their schooling, and over the years, the second language is immersed gradually into their instruction mode. It ensures that they have a better grasp of the second language. It has further two types.

A] Early Exit Transitional Bilingual Education Model

In this model, students are taught to adopt the mode of instruction in the second language as early as possible. In fact, the fluency that they achieve in their native language is treated as a base for learning the other one. As their fluency increases in the second language, more instructional materials, such as books, projects, teaching modes, etc. are immersed in their learning.

B] Late Exit Transitional Bilingual Education Model

Although the late exit model is similar in structure and function to the early Exit model; the main difference lies in the duration. The students in this model move to the instructional methods and resources in the second language, quite late. Their language learning occurs at a slower pace as compared to the first one.

2]  Maintenance Bilingual Education Model

Maintenance Bilingual Education or MBE is often referred to as the stronger mode of bilingual education. It helps students to be competent in the second language while maintaining their native language. The model is designed to foster the native language, culture, and tradition of the students with the bilingual immersion program

Unlike the approach followed in TBE, in the maintenance of bilingual education, the student's mode of instruction is in their native language and the other language simultaneously. It allows the students to be fluent in both languages at the same time, and they acquire the skill to master linguistic proficiency efficiently.

In MBE two, different paths are followed for teaching students, static maintenance and developmental maintenance to imbibe in the students the skill of speaking, reading, and writing in more than one language.

Conclusion

Before enrolling your student in a bilingual school, it is of utmost importance to know what is the approach being followed in their schools. Some particular approaches might work for an individual, while not for others. It is essential to figure out which one works for your child to get them enrolled in a school that follows that particular mode of teaching. It not only gives you the desired output but also works in favor of increasing career opportunities for your child.
